Gritting

Commercial Gritting Services

Complete Gritting Services provides professional, forecast-led gritting for businesses and organisations across the UK and Ireland, helping to keep sites safe, accessible and open for business throughout winter.

We start by understanding your site, identifying areas of risk and agreeing a clear service plan. From there we will monitor weather conditions, deploy our teams when treatment is required and maintain a transparent record of every application.

How our gritting service works

1. Site survey

Every site has different access routes, pedestrian areas and operational requirements, so we start by understanding yours. Before providing a quote, we carry out a detailed survey which can include:

  • Vehicle entrances, exits and access roads

  • Car parks, service yards and loading areas

  • Footpaths, steps and pedestrian routes

  • Slopes, ramps and areas prone to standing water

  • Restricted-access or security-controlled areas

  • Site-specific hazards and operational priorities

We will also discuss service times, operating hours, access arrangements, reporting requirements and areas that require particular attention. This allows us to design the service around how your site is actually used rather than relying on a generic treatment plan.

2. Service specification

Following the survey we prepare a clear specification setting out the areas to be treated and the practical requirements for each visit. Where appropriate, this can include a marked site plan identifying treatment areas and priority zones so that critical access routes and high traffic areas receive the correct level of attention. Your specification can also record access and security procedures, site contacts and any special instructions for individual locations.

3. Clear quotation

Once the scope of work has been agreed, we provide a quotation based on size, layout and requirements of your site. This explains the proposed service, areas included, pricing structure, agreed treatment criteria and any site-specific requirements. For organisations managing multiple locations, we can provide individual site pricing within one consolidated service proposal.

4. Met Office forecasts

Throughout the winter season, we monitor weather forecasts using the Met Office OpenSite service. We carefully consider forecasting information alongside local conditions and your agreed service criteria, paying particular attention to factors such as

  • Forecast air and ground temperatures

  • The likelihood and timing of frost

  • Rainfall followed by or following falling temperatures

  • Snow and freezing precipitation

Where a forecast-led service is agreed, this information determines whether treatment is required. Critically, this models removes both the contractor and client from making a subjective decision about when to deploy, that decision is instead driven by specialist forecasting and the activation criteria for your site. Using this method means we can treat proactively, before hazardous conditions are expected to develop.

5. Deployment and treatment

When treatment is required, our local gritting teams are deployed in accordance with your site specification. Drivers follow the designated treatment route and any instructions agreed during the survey. Depending on your site, this may include:

  • Site sign-in and sign-out procedures

  • Security and gatehouse protocols

  • Access-control requirements

  • Delivery restrictions

  • Out-of-hours instructions

  • Site-specific health and safety procedures

Our fleet includes gritting vehicles with automatic rate control, helping us apply treatment accurately and consistently. We use non-residue white salt, helping to keep building entrances clean.

6. GPS tracked service records

Transparency is an important part of our service. Our gritting vehicles can be GPS tracked providing a digital record of attendance and movement around your site. Depending on the service arrangement, records may include:

  • Date and time of attendance

  • Vehicle arrival and departure times

  • GPS route information

  • Areas treated

  • Driver or operative details

  • Quantity of salt used

  • Site notes or reported issues

  • Sign-in and sign-out confirmation

These records provide a clear audit trail and can support your own health and safety, compliance and facilities-management processes.

7. Reporting and auditability

Completed service information is recorded and retained, creating a traceable history of winter maintenance activity.

Should you need to review a particular date, weather event or location, relevant records can be identified and checked.

This can be particularly useful when:

  • Reviewing an incident or complaint

  • Responding to an insurance enquiry

  • Checking contractor attendance

  • Confirming agreed routes were treated

  • Verifying service delivery across multiple sites

  • Supporting internal compliance reviews

It replaces assumptions with documented information and gives you greater confidence that work has been completed in line with the agreed specification.

8. Reconciliation

At the end of each billing period, completed visits are reconciled against our operational records. We check attendance data, service reports and relevant site information before invoices are produced.

For multi-site contracts, services can be reconciled individually whilst still being managed as part of one consolidated account.

9. Clear and accurate invoicing

Invoices are prepared using reconciled service information and can be structured around the needs of your organisation.

Depending on your requirements, this can include site names and references, dates of visits, service descriptions, purchase order numbers, individual site charges and consolidated portfolio totals. Specific cost centres, purchase order processes and invoicing requirements can all be agreed during setup.

Choose how you pay

We offer two approaches to help organisations manage their winter maintenance budgets.

Pay As You Go

Gritting is carried out when required according to the agreed forecast criteria and you pay for the treatments delivered.

Fixed Season Price

A fixed-price service for the winter season provides greater certainty over costs and allows you to budget in advance.

Both service options are established parts of the Complete Gritting Services offering.

Single site or national portfolio

Our network enables us to support everything from an individual site to organisations operating across multiple regions. Each site can have its own specification, treatment areas, operating hours and access instructions while being managed within one overall contract.

For regional and national accounts, a dedicated account manager provides a single point of contact across the portfolio. If you are managing several premises or a national portfolio talk to us about co-ordinated winter maintenance across your locations.

Put your winter plan in place

Don't wait until the first severe frost to review your gritting arrangements.

A site survey gives you a clear specification, transparent quotation and practical plan for managing winter conditions.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

When will you grit my site?

For a forecast-led service, we monitor Met Office OpenSite forecasts alongside the activation criteria agreed for your site. We consider factors including forecast ground temperatures, frost, rainfall and freezing precipitation to determine when treatment is required, allowing us to deploy proactively before hazardous conditions are expected to develop.

Do you grit every time the temperature drops below zero?

Not necessarily. Air temperature alone does not determine whether treatment is required. We consider forecast ground temperatures, precipitation, frost risk and other relevant conditions alongside the agreed criteria for your site.

Can you grit secure sites or premises with restricted access?

Yes. Access requirements are discussed during the initial site survey and incorporated into your service specification. This can include gatehouse procedures, access codes, security checks, sign-in and sign-out requirements and instructions for out-of-hours visits.

How do I know my site has been gritted?

Our gritting vehicles can be GPS tracked, providing a digital record of attendance and movement around your site. Depending on your service arrangement, records can also include arrival and departure times, areas treated, salt quantities, driver details and site notes, providing a traceable record of the work completed.

Can you manage gritting across multiple sites?

Yes. Our national network of local teams enables us to manage individual sites, regional estates and national property portfolios. Each location can have its own treatment areas, operating hours, access arrangements and instructions, while the overall contract is co-ordinated through a dedicated account manager.

How much does commercial gritting cost?

The cost depends on factors including the size and layout of your site, the areas requiring treatment and your individual service requirements. We carry out a site survey before preparing a clear quotation, and you can choose between Pay As You Go or a Fixed Season Price depending on how you prefer to manage your winter maintenance budget.
